Description: From a Tucson Country Club estate are these compellingly superior Hubert Yowytewa Hopi sterling silver overlay man's watch band tips, currently dressing an I believe 1960's or so "Othello 17" 17-jewel Swiss manual wind mechanical wristwatch. Hubert's beauties feature a well executed impression of the Kokopelli petroglyph figure - that confidant imagery and precise overlay cut work indicative of talent and an elevated aesthetic sensibility. A chiseled "HY" along with his father's guild symbol to the back of both tips absolutely confirm the maker. Hubert Yowytewa was born into the Reed Clan at Bacavi. He was initiated into the craft by father Arthur in 1965 (the elder Yowytewa had participated in the Veteran's Silversmithing Classes under Fred Kabotie and Paul Saufkie during the 1940's), and later worked for the Sekaquaptewa brothers at Hopicrafts. The offered tips do not bear any Hopicrafts subsidiary marking, so may have been crafted before or very slightly after the Hopicrafts experience. Hubert passed in 1991, making all of his work a several decade vintage proposition. Weight is good for the form at about 63.3 total grams on my portable digital scale - that's with the Othello watch (I can't weigh just the tips without removing them from the watch, an easy enough job I'm leaving to the new owner). Condition of Hubert's silver work is quite fine with a distinct aura of time to the overlay surfaces. Be aware I have avoided every urge to refresh away or "improve" upon any natural toning - you want it done, you do it. The original oxidized finish within the decorative overlay is well preserved. While there are some normal and expected signs of previous service, physical preservation is still very nice (have a look at those close up photos). The included watch also appears to be in good shape - it winds and runs and the date mechanism appears to work as it should. I'm sure it would benefit greatly from a fresh CLA - that said you can choose to switch out the watch, so simply consider it a generous come along gift. I'm basically nitpicking for the obsessive, and a look at those pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Size of the tips is about 1 7/16 in. vertical measured in a straight line and 1 1/8 in. at the widest. They can fit up to about 3/4 in. (19mm) lugs. The Othello watch case is about 35mm across, so definitely a man's timepiece. If you prefer historic Southwestern tribal silver by well referenced makers, or simply wish a single immediate improvement to the ambiance of each day, these will have great meaning for you.inkfrog terapeak
