Description: This exquisite painting is an 18th century Engagement Portrait of a young French girl ( 12 - 16 years old ) written on back " Done by order of the Comte d'Athalege (probably her father) for the Duke d'Alefotnes "( most likely the father of the intended bridegroom). This is officially stamped by an18th Century French Nobility Comte Sealing Wax Stamp Seal . This was part of how a marriage contract was agreed upon by the nobility and aristocrats of the15th to 19th centuries . WW1 changed all that . The young lady is shown in a lovely dusty rose pink ( Cremoisie was a favorite color of the period ) satin dress , with lace trim , her hair is marvelously coiffed , most likely with added postiches to augment the height and fullness , but also with tresses of hair worn down her back to show she is a virginly maiden . The magnificent frame , of solid sculpted wood and gold leaf is a work of art on its own. In its entirety , it measures 54" x 44". The painting alone is quite large at 40+"x 30+".
