Description: This listing is for the large original acrylic painting “Tall Blue, Open Series” by Michael Loew (American, 1907-1985). About this work: One of the major proponents of Abstract Expressionism and influenced by the Neo-Plasticism of Mondrian, Michael Loew circulated among the upper echelons of the New York School of Abstract Expressionists. Despite their opposing approaches to abstraction, he became a longtime friend of Willem de Kooning, whom he met completing WPA projects during the 1930s. Writing on the relationship, Rose C. S. Slivka elaborates, “They [de Kooning and Loew] generally agreed on most things, including the recognition that although each was on opposite sides of the coin, it was the same coin.” Drawing inspiration from life, Loew transformed subjects into unique patterns of rectangles or color fields, often naming the final composition according to the dominant colors. This particular acrylic on canvas example features a vibrant deep blue background, which has been dissected by green, blue, and black lines. It is signed and inscribed by Loew on the reverse. Size: 66 inches tall by 54 inches wide Provenance: The artist; (by descent) Private collection, NY; Private collection, PA; Acquired from the above About the artist: Though the painter Michael Loew is today best known for his colorful and gestural Abstract Expressionist paintings, his style culminated from a multitude of influences. Loew first trained in a stained-glass workshop and with the Ashcan School, and produced figural murals with his like-minded friend Willem de Kooning as part of the WPA initiatives. During his time spent in the tutelage of Hans Hofmann, Loew turned his interest towards abstraction, and his works became influenced by both Post-Cubism and Neo-Plasticism. His radical experiments with color and geometry came to define his mature style. Loew was also passionate about artists’ rights and activism, and led a number of demonstrations. He was part of the Spiral Group, an artist organization devoted to exhibiting experimental art. Condition: Good overall condition. Some areas of abrasion and rubbing to edges and corners. Unframed, as intended. Due to the work’s size it is listed for free local pick up only. Buyers may arrange their own shipping with a freight shipper of their choice.
