FORMAT Paperback LANGUAGE English CONDITION Brand New Publisher Description The Andean civilisations grew in an isolated fashion, with almost no influence from the rest of the world or indeed from further north in the Americas. The various Andean states and empires all came to express themselves in highly original and different art styles, not least the Moche. Here, de Bock presents a study based on his close examination of the art of the Moche - elaborate scenes painted on bottles - and clearly demonstrates the implications of this in the study of social and economic life. From the simplest scenes to the most elaborate, Moche art reflects models of social and political culture. The study is intended to allow the pictorial evidence of the Moche to provide insights into Andean civilisation as a whole. Author Biography Edward K. de Bock Promotional This publication examines the iconography of the Moche ceremonial pottery of Northern Peru. Without writing, this iconography is a main source for Andean civilisation. If we can identify the grammar of the Moche canon we can start to correlate scenes and understand the meaning of the reoccurring components. Long Description This publicationaims to present the internal logic of one of the most fascinating iconographiesof a prehistoric society, namely that of the Moche culture of Northern Peru, AD100-800. This was a highly developed society with complex rituals, which were paintedin great detail on ceremonial pottery. At the beginning of the twentiethcentury the images on the pottery were interpreted as scenes from daily life orfrom mythology, but we now know that the iconography shows exclusively ritualand religion. Since none of the Andean cultures possessed a writing system, therich iconography of the Moche culture forms one of our main sources forstudying the Andean civilisation. If we can identify the grammar of the Mochecanon we can start to correlate scenes and to understand their meaning and thatof the reoccurring components.
