Pueblo shamans use hummingbirds as couriers to send gifts to the Great Mother who lives beneath the earth. To many of the Pueblo the hummingbird is a tobacco bird. In one myth Hummingbird gets smoke from Caterpillar, the guardian of the tobacco plant. Hummingbird brings smoke to the shamans so they can purify the earth. This vintage Kachina Doll is 13 inches tall, 9" wide and 8" deep. He is holding a bow in one hand and rattle in the other. His body is painted in a distressed brown. The costume is black and red leather with a tuquoise bead. Rabbit fur adorns his neck, shoulders, wrists and ankles. waist and ankles. This figure is carved from wood and is hand painted. Really gorgeous piece in mint condition! The bottom of the piece is signed by Navajo artisan along with census number..
