Hurricanes of 87 Squadron return to their West Country base to refuel and re-arm during the heavy fighting in August 1940. Hurricane pilots were credited with four-fifths of all RAF victories in the Battle of Britain guaranteeing the Hawker Hurricane its place in history as Britain's most successful fighter during the most significant air battle of World War II. Loved by its pilots, this sturdy little fighter could take all kinds of damage and still fly its pilot home. Nick's new limited edition superbly captures the mood of the period, his rendition of both aircraft and countryside demonstrating why he is widely regarded as one of the world's foremost aviation artists. Seen in the forefront of the painting is the MK I Hurricane flown by Ian Gleed, as he and other 87 Squadron pilots make a hurried return to their field. Three Hurricane heroes who fought in the Battle of Britain have signed every print in the edition. Wing Commander Roland 'Bee' Beamont CBE DSO DFC DL One of World War II's great characters, Bee flew Hurricanes with 87 Squadron, later leading a Tempest Wing. He had 8 victories plus a further 32 VIs destroyed. After the war he became a highly respected Chief Test Pilot. Squadron Leader Lawrence Thorogood DFC AE Joining 87 Squadron on June 14, 1940, Lawrence Thorogood was thrown straight into the Battle of Britain, destroying a Ju88 on 25th August. Commissioned in 1941 he then was posted to India and remained in the Far East until the end of the war. Group Captain Tom Dalton Morgan A leading Battle of Britain Hurricane Ace from 43 Squadron, he achieved a total of 18 victories.
