Description: What About Walden: Walden Art Stories is a content-driven art gallery with its headquarters in an 18th century townhouse in the centre of Antwerp, Belgium. Its eBay shop Walden Art Classics was set up to cater a fine selection of Old World art to the New World. The Bigger Picture: The print up for auction is a very rare engraving by Hans Witdoeck (or Jan Witdoeck; alt.: Witdoek and Witdouc), who was trained by Peter Paul Rubens and worked in his workshop from the mid 1630s. In the baroque master’s workshop he learned to engrave large plates and his style became more fluid. This particular engraving of Roman emperor Marcus Tullus Cicero after an antique marble portrait sculpture was made under supervision of Rubens in 1638. The fact that Rubens was closely involved in the design and execution of the prints made by Witdoeck, is documented by their revision and production process (five retouched proof impressions were made). Of the series of engravings made by Witdoeck only six of Rubens' preparatory drawings have survived. Witdoeck produced his best work in Rubens’ workshop. In his prints after Rubens he shows a great skill in capturing the movement and variety of colour in the original works through his clever use of black, grey and white tones.
