Description: "I MANAGED GOOD, BUT BOY DID THEY PLAY BAD," Written and Edited by Jim Bouton, with Neil Offen and many guest contributors, 1973 1st edition, A Playboy Press Book (Chicago, IL), 8.485 x 5.75-inch linen-clad HB with author's embossed name at front and embossed silver lettering at spine, DJ, 326 pp. + an unnumbered "gag" photo of Babe Ruth and 2 pals, printed on quality matte-finished stock which looks great at age 51; very good-plus overall condition (book is very good-plus - clean and tightly bound with bright covers and surprisingly bright pages; small bumps at tips of upper corner, larger one at tip of lower front corner; DJ is bright, clean and fully intact on exposed surfaces, toning at upper underside spine corner; curling at front and rear edges, a small taped tear each at lower front spine corner and upper rear spine corner; light curling at vertical flap edges; $7.95 at upper front flap). Jim Bouton was a handsome, cocky pitcher for the New York Yanees starting in 1962. He was traded to the Seattle pilots late in the 1969 season. His diary of his tumultuous 1969 season covered the trade but also high and low-lights from his many years with the Yanks. It offered a behind-the-scenes looks at the bad behavior he witnessed and participated in, including obscene jokes, drunken womanizing, and routine drug use. It was a bestseller but condemned by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn. He pitched for the Seattle Pilot s and Houston Astros through 1978 and is considered not just a fine pitcher in his prime but also one of baseball's true originals and a "bad boy". He was born in New Jersey in 1939 and died in Massachusetts in 2019. In this book, enhanced by 80 B&W photos, some rare, Bouton and contributing writers including Roger Kahn, Edward Linn and John Lardner profile fifteen famous and infamous managers. My fave from scanning it is the chapter on Casey Stengel, cleverly titled "Musings Of A Dogout Socrates," by Gilbert Millstein. There are 6 other copies on eBay with DJs and at least cover photos. The cheapest is $15.00 with free shipping for for a very good copy. My Buy-It-Now price of $14.99 includes shipping bubble-wrapped in a cardboard box via media mail, which takes areund 7 days with tracking.
