This is, after all, ‘The Opening Performance'. The Mathematician is sent to buy tickets. He can only buy one ticket. That's all that's left. The Magician suggests they draw for the ticket. The Mathematician has his doubts about this method so the Magician mixes the cards. The Mathematician insists on cutting the cards. Then the Magician arranges them in 3 piles of 3 cards. He tells the Mathematician to eliminate one one pile by placing the envelope with the ticket on that pile. He then says unless the pile eliminated adds up to the date on the ticket - the Mathematician can have the ticket. Further more, as he turns over the top 2 cards of each pile, forming 3 two digit numbers, if these 3 numbers do not add up to the exact seat number of the ticket - the Mathematician can have the ticket. At this point, the Mathematician insists on mixing the two piles. The Magician hesitates, but then shrugs and agrees. When the cards are turned and added, they total 165: the exact seat number. When the 3 cards eliminated by the Mathematician are added they equal 15, the date on the ticket and when the Magician’s wallet is opened, there is a check made out to the mathematician for $85, the price of the ticket and, of course, it's signed The Magician.
