Description: Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York, 1936. First Edition. Very Good in a Good unfaded dust jacket with rubbing and bumping to edges and the top and bottom of the spine. Appears to be signed by some of the original 1936 stage cast, but more importantly it is signed by the dedicatees, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. Basis for the 1939 MGM film which starred Clark Gable. This was Sherwood's indictment of war and fanatical nationalism during a time when the world was on the verge of its second world war. The play predicts the coming conflict with a fictionalized bombing attack on Paris by the Italians. Sherwood himself had served in the Canadian Black Watch of the 42nd Battalion during the First World War and was wounded and gassed in the battle of Arras. He went on to become editor-in-chief of the motion picture column for 'Life' magazine.
