Description: Offered by Over The Blue Horizon and recently obtained in Tokyo is the premier issue from the venerable but still very well-regarded Japanese MARU SPECIAL series: “Imperial Japanese Navy Battleships NAGATO and MUTSU”, Volume 1, June 1975. The MARU SPECIAL series was published from 1975 to 1987 and each of the 135 volumes focused on a naval vessel, family of vessels, or campaign, most dealing with the Imperial Japanese Navy. The MARU SPECIALs offered a very popular combination of period photographs (some with rare detail), line drawings, color drawings in a few cases, and affordability. Although printed with Japanese text, the earlier volumes such as this one had English language captions, but regardless of the difficulty of translation, the MARU SPECIALs remain very popular with naval historians and advanced military modelers and these out-of-print gems are still frequently referenced. This particular MARU SPECIAL features the NAGATO and MUTSU – at the time of their commissioning in 1920 and 1921, the most powerful battleships in the world. The first battleships to mount 16 inch guns, these fast, heavily armored capital ships featured the distinctive Japanese ‘pagoda’ foremasts which were added during a major 1930s upgrade. The NAGATO was Admiral Yamamoto’s flagship during the attack on Pearl Harbor but did not see action until late in the war – at the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the Battle of Sibuyan Sea. She survived the war at Yokosuka, and was sunk at Bikini Atoll during atomic bomb testing in 1946. The MUTSU participated in the Midway invasion and in operations around Guadalcanal but in June 1943, she sank while anchored in Hashirajima Bay due to a magazine explosion. This 66-page, 7.25 x 10.25 inch vintage classic has some great photographs, line drawings, and two pages of color illustrations. Although text is in Japanese, each photograph in this book has an English language caption. Condition is VERY GOOD – tight, bright and clean in every respect!
