Selection of vintage 80's comic books from a variety of independent publishing houses that tried to make a run at Marvel and DC dominance. These books are all over 30 years old and try to offer a different take on the comic book art form. I do combine shipping and offer discounts for multiple issues. Creating listings by title with issues as a variation seems to be the most efficient, plus allows me to automatically combine shipping and to offer discounts for multiple issues purchased. Important note about shipping: I ship my comics in their sealed Mylar bag (no backing board) sandwiched between two 8.5" x 11" pieces of 1/8" corrugated cardboard placed in a 12" x 9" manila envelope. This should be adequate to protect the comics 99% of the time when shipped first class. You will have the choice to select either first class or economy/media mail shipping. Be advised that economy shipping is just like it sounds -- economy/3rd class and mail isn't treated all that well. Most of the time my packaging should withstand the abuse that 3rd class mail sees, but I can't be held responsible for damage caused by the post office in delivering the package as described. Man of Rust #1A & 1B (Blackthorne 1986)While at first this appears to be nothing more than a parody of DC Comics landmark Man of Steel mini-series, readers delving between the lines are treated to gem of satirical delight. Writer Cliff MacGillivray sets his sights on the jugular and never lets go. The subject of his satire is not, as it would first appear, that pinnacle that all super-heroes strive for, but, in fact, the corporation that would arbitrarily alter a legend. From beginning to end Rick Burchet delivers hilarious images in true Mad magazine fashion. Miami Mice #1, 2, 3, 4 (Rip Off Press 1986)If you’re busting a gut laughing at the idea of a rodent-infested TV parody this is the comic for you. And if you’re a Cerebus completist you’ll have to pick up the fourth issue. Mighty Mites #1 (Eternity 1986)There was nothing wrong with the idea, as Marvel would later appropriate it for their X-Babies specials, and the artwork is appealing enough, if lacking in background. No, the problem is in the writing. This X-Men parody goes for the obvious joke every time, most honing in on the prolix tendencies and soul-searching of the source material as it was then. More issues were planned, but none were forthcoming. Mildly Microwaved Pre-Pubescent Kung-Fu Gophers #1 (Just Imagine Graphics 1986)Yet another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles parody. Collect them all! Myron Moose Funnies #1 (Fantagraphics 1987)Reprints of the early 70s comic. Like most underground comics, Myron Moose Funnies focuses on sex, drugs, and social commentary and draws inspiration from the work of a number of comics legends, including Milton, Windsor McKay, and Joe Kubert. Myron struggles to get into the panels of his comic strips, sometimes being crushed by them; at other times, he’s swinging through the jungle like Tarzan or taking on dastardly villains like Terry of Terry and the Pirates. Funny stuff, though crudely rendered. Mythos #1 (Wonder Comix 1987)This 10-issue limited series was conceived with lofty ambitions—as the comics equivalent to Ray Bradbury’s Martian Chronicles or Robert Heinlein’s Universe tales. What it is, though, is a series of modestly entertaining, somewhat derivative science fiction stories that all exist in the same universe. Seattle-based comic writer and cartoonist Nils Osmar handled the words, while a variety of artists—most notably Tim Sale (Daredevil: Yellow, Batman: The Long Halloween), turning in some early cover efforts—took care of the pictures. Overall, despite such gaudy story titles as “Zakaya” and “Spore Wars” the series is eminently readable, and head-and-shoulders above most indy efforts of the time. Naive Inter-Dimensional Commando Koalas (Eclipse 1986)Four marsupials named Bruce front the legendary band from down under known as The Koalas. On the night they plan to play their loudest song ever, to the thrills of fans and record execs alike, a freak occurrence transports the band mates from the upside down world of Australia (literally) to the concrete jungles of New York. There they are recruited by the U.S. government to take down the renegade Sheik Ratal N’Raul who has taken over land of Myopia. Though reluctant to undertake such a dangerous mission, the koalas answer the call. After all this isn’t just about protecting the world’s oil supply: this is about freedom and justice.
