It consists of information I have accumulated and developed for use in my undergraduate aerial photo course at Oregon State University. It is different from most text books in that each chap - ter starts with a clear statement of objectives. This not only serves as an introduction to each chapter but also states exactly what the student is expected to learn. The first eight chapters are basic to photointerpretation in all natural resource disciplines. The next three chapters: timber type mapping, elementary sampling and forest photo mensuration are strongly oriented to forest management. Chapter XII, "Interpretation of Landforms and Drainage Patterns" should be of interest to several disciplines: forestry, engineering, geology range management, and perhaps others. Chapter XIII, "Photogrammetry" gives a brief introduction to the U.S. Public Land Survey system and planimetric mapping from aerial photographs with emphasis on radial line triangulation. Chapter XV, "Ortho-photography" added in 1978 should be of use to all users of aerial photography. The photo reproductions are included only to clarify the text material--they are not intended to be of sufficient quality for good photo-interpretation. These half-tone reproductions and soft cover binding have greatly reduced production costs and therefore the cost to you. Being somewhat quantitative in nature, the mathematics involved has not been kept to a minimum, but it has been kept as simple as pos - sible. All that is required is a basic understanding of high school level algebra and geometry. I wish to acknowledge the help of Mr. Anthony Follett who, as a graduate student, developed a series of slide-tape presentations based primarily on my lecture notes. These scripts were used extensively in the preparation of Chapters II through VIII. I also wish to acknowledge my former aerial photo professor and present Department Head, Dr. J.R. Dilworth, who encouraged the writing of this text book and contributed the specimen contract. The book is presently being revised and expanded for publication by John Wiley and Sons, Inc., in late 1979 or 1980. Additional topics to be covered include: map projections and grid coordinates, the trans - fer of detail, films and filters, an introduction to remote sensing (thermal, radar, and Landsat imagery), and the use of aerial photos in gology, soils, engineering, land use planning, forestry, outdoor recreation, and fisheries and wildlife management. The aerial photointerpretation course at the O.S.U. School of Forestry is taught utilizing a "personalized system of instruction" for - mat. There are no required lecture or laboratory periods but the instructor and graduate lab. assistant are available for student help dur - ing the regularly scheduled lecture and lab. periods. The scheduled lecture periods have become help sessions for students requiring additional guidance. In addition to the book there is a series of 14 slide-tapes covering many sections of the revised book to be published by John Wiley and Sons, Inc.
