Sargent Engraved by John Woods The Senatorial Palace stands on the ruins of two buildings which date back to Roman times: the Tabularium and the adjacent Temple of Veiove. Built under the direction of Quintus Lutatius Catulus in 78 BC to house state records, the great arches of the arcade and the imposing square stonework (opera quadrata) walls of the Tabularium cover the southern slope of the Capitoline hill looking out over the Roman Forum. Many inscriptions testifying the completion of the monument can be seen all along the Via di San Pietro in Carcere, engraved on ancient buildings which once belonged to a corridor linking a series of vaulted rooms. According to various academics these rooms were used as tax collection offices, the main revenue offices being situated in the Temple of Saturn in the Forum and the Republic and Imperial Roman Age mint being located at the top of the Capitoline hill (Arce).
