The opening movement, which is ecstatic and profoundly felt, is simply laden with calm and controlled intensity, resulting in a tremendous expressive reality. I "found" it years ago but have yet to memorize it, and with each listen, I am more impressed with its excellence. Max Bruch's sole other notable composition is his beautiful Kol Nedri for cello and orchestra, written in 1881. For a high-level understanding, I recommend Rostropovich, Fournier, or Ma. The sound on this EMI "Itkhaz Perlam Collection" is rich, deep, and beautifully presented, since these compositions were originally recorded in Amsterdam in June 1983 and Tel Aviv in July 1986, and the associated booklet is decent but not extensive, as is customary for EMI.
