Soldiers loved a mascot and a civilian named S.M. Jefffers purchased the eagle for the soldiers. The eagle, "Old Abe" was named by U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division in Wisconsin after their Commander-in-Chief, President Abraham Lincoln. J.I. Case first saw the eagle in 1861 as Company C was on parade in Eau Claire. Case immediately was determined to make Old Abe his business trademark after the war. In 1865 Old Abe began his career as the most famous bird in agriculture history. Old Abe was kept at the State House in Madison where he had thousands of visitors.
