He successfully defended his title six times and produced the sport's first million-dollar gate (1921), before he lost a 10-round decision to Gene Tunney in 1926 and retired from the ring. During World War II, he was Director of Physical Education for the Coast Guard, rising to the rank of commander. He taught unarmed fighting to Coast Guard sailors, and edited a training manual, How to Fight Tough (1942). Most or all of the co-signers here worked with Dempsey on unarmed combat training. They include LOU AMBERS (1913-1995), "Herkimer Hurricane" was boxing lightweight championship from 1936 to 1939, interrupted by a loss by decision in the first of two great fights against Henry Amstong in 1938. In 102 fights, Ambers had a record of 88 wins (29 by KOs), eight losses (2 by KOs) and six draws. HERB KROETAN (1921-2006), New York State Golden Gloves champion, went on to serve 46 years as boxing coach and physical education instructor at West Point. ANDY FILOSA was a renowned instructor of boxing, wrestling and free-style fighting. He contributed an article to How to Fight Tough. GEORGE BRUCKMAN was Georgia Championship Wrestler, and a leading competitor in matches of the 1940s and 1950s. PAUL "TINY" WYATT, a heavyweight boxer from Oklahoma City, was knocked out in his only three professional fights (1944), retiring from the ring thereafter. ED SPOTTS lettered in football and basketball with the Pitt Panthers (1937-1938), and later coached high school sports. JOHN A. DERR (1917-2015) was a nationally known sports broadcaster who provided radio (and early CBS-TV) coverage of the Olympics; the World Series; boxing, including Joe Louis' fights; and many golf tournaments, including the Masters and the Ryder Cup. MICK MASTERS was a light heavyweight boxer, active from 1934 to 1937. His pro record was 16-10-3.
