Typed Letter signed: "J Ruppert", 1p, 6x6¾. New York, 1915 December 23. To Carl A. Loeffler, U.S. Senate, Washington, D.C. In full: "I wish to acknowledge the receipt of your Christmas and New Years card, and thank you very much for your kind thought in having sent it to me. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas, and hoping the New Year will be full of much happiness and prosperity for you." On May 15, 1915, Jacob Ruppert, Sr., founder of the Jacob Ruppert Brewing Co., died, hence the black-border. CARL LOEFFLER was Assistant Doorkeeper of the Senate, later rising to Secretary of the Senate. JACOB RUPPERT, JR. represented New York in Congress from 1899-1907. A year before this letter was written, on December 31, 1914, Ruppert purchased and became president of the New York Yankees, serving in that capacity until his death in New York City, January 13, 1939. At the time, the Yankees were one of the weaker teams in the AL. Colonel Ruppert, an honorary appointment in the state's National Guard, hired Miller Huggins to manage the Yankees in 1917, acquired Babe Ruth in 1919 and hired Ed Barrow as General Manager in 1920. It was Ruppert who designed the Yankees' pinstripe uniforms hoping it would make Babe Ruth look slimmer. In 1923, Yankee Stadium opened. By the time of Ruppert's death in 1939, the Yankees were firmly established as baseball's most successful franchise. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012. Fine condition.
