NOTES James Baldwin began work on "Another Country" while living in Greenwich Village, NYC in 1948 before moving to Paris late that year where he continued his work on the novel. Baldwin would move back to New York in 1957, and ultimately finished work on "Another Country" while briefly residing in Istanbul."Another Country" first follows Rufus Scott, a jazz drummer who enters into a relationship with a white woman who he abuses, and after a stint in a mental hospital, Rufus commits suicide, leading the rest of the novel to explore his friends and family's reactions and relationships following his death. The novel would tackle many topics considered at the time to be taboo including homo- and bisexuality, interracial couples, and extramarital affairs. The use of such taboo topics garnered the novel a litany of negative reviews, from Black Panther member Eldrige Cleaver's condemnation of the novels depiction of black masculinity believing it "feminized" the black man, to being outright banned in New Orleans and the Australian commonwealth.Despite these controversies, "Another Country" was and remains a popular novel, landing itself in Anthony Burgess' essay "Ninety-nine Novels: The best in English since 1939", published in 1984.
