Paperback. 9 inches tall by 6 inches wide. James (birth name Jacques-Francois) Pitot was born in 1759 in Normandy, France. Because of Royal connections, he fled his homeland during the French Revolution. After a brief period in Sainte Domingue (now Haiti), he arrived in Philadelphia where he became a naturalized American citizen. In 1796, he landed in Spanish Louisiana, becoming a merchant and a member of the New Orleans city council. Pitot wrote a memoir of his first six years in New Orleans, which is considered an invaluable primary source document about the end of the Spanish regime. After the Louisiana Purchase, he was appointed as the third mayor of New Orleans by territorial Governor Claiborne. He served for just over a year. He remained active as an attorney and jurist (Judge of the Probate Court) for the remainder of his life, passing in 1831. He was also involved in a variety of business ventures, including navigation from Lake Pontchartrain, via Bayou St. John, to a "turning basin" in New Orleans (located at what would be named "Basin Street"). A museum bearing his name is located on this Bayou. This book tells Pitot's story in some detail and is well researched and referenced. Please see complete description of condition and photos.
