Description: Do you think I am an automaton? — a machine without feelings? and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! — I have as much soul as you — and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh: it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God's feet, equal — as we are! "We do not hesitate to say that the tone of mind and thought which has overthrown authority and violated every code human and divine abroad, and fostered rebellion at home, is the same which has also written Jane Eyre." ~ London's Quarterly Review, 1848. Here we offer an early Victorian edition of the classic, canonical British novel, Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, published by Porter and Coates, Philadelphia. It is undated, but I'd place it around 1876, the zenith year for this publisher's output due to the book's Victorian appearance and the quality of the materials. It is complete including the original frontispiece steel engraving and vignette title page ("Gateshead Hall"). Though this is a posthumous printing, and the author's name appears on the title page, she is signed in the preface by her nom de plume, Currer Bell. Original degraded 3/4 leather binding has been replaced with light brown book cloth and acid-free flyleaves have been added at front and rear gutters in addition to a gold placeholding ribbon. Period bookplate at front endpapers. Binding is very tight and square. Minor soiling to the side of the book block and a few fingerprints within. Otherwise, text is very clean, bright, and crisp. Measures approximately 7.75 x 4.75-inches. 514 pages. This very early edition of Bronte's masterwork will make a splendid addition to your collection or a very special gift. Please click HERE to see the other Bronte classics we offer!
