A nationally popular sculptor Born in 1912 in Ochiai Maino, Yamato-cho, Kurokawa-gun, Miyagi Prefecture. His father died when he was six, so he spent his childhood in his mother's hometown of Yubari, Hokkaido. In 1925, he entered the former Sapporo Second Middle School (now Sapporo Nishi High School, Hokkaido). In 1932, he moved to Tokyo and studied at Kawabata Art School. In 1934, he entered the sculpture department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. After graduating from the school in 1939, he participated in the founding of the sculpture department of the Shinseisakuha Association with his classmates, Funakoshi Yasutake and others. He was detained in Siberia from 1945 to 1948. In 1954, he won the Honorable Mention Award at the 1st Contemporary Japanese Art Exhibition. In 1959, he set up a studio in Eifuku, Suginami-ku, Tokyo, and lived there until his death. In 1960, he won the 3rd Takamura Kotaro Award. In 1966, he became a professor at Tokyo Zokei University when it was founded. In 1974, he received the 15th Mainichi Art Award and the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize, and the following year he received the 6th Nakahara Teijiro Award and the 3rd Nagano City Outdoor Sculpture Award. In 1977, he received the 5th Nagano City Outdoor Sculpture Award and the 31st Hokkaido Shimbun Culture Award. In 1981, he held a solo exhibition at the Musee Rodin in France. In 1986, he became a professor emeritus at Tokyo Zokei University. In 1989, he received the Asahi Prize. In 1990, he established the Sato Tadayoshi Memorial Museum at the Miyagi Museum of Art. In 1992, he received the 41st Kahoku Culture Award. He died of old age on March 30, 2011 at his home in Eifuku, Suginami Ward, Tokyo. He was 98 years old.
