Description: Here in the Japanese Boro tradition of older garments marked by time, with some flaws that add character, this kimono is a delightful mystery because it has little documentation to help us know its past or its specifics. The only tag is in Japanese and seems to tell us that it should not be washed but that it can be ironed and possibly dry cleaned. Fabric content is 100% something for lining and shell. Nice and long – a true tunic or jacket. Fully lined, including sleeves, and finished beauifully. Lined kimono sleeves with underhanging flaps. Inside tie joins plum / purple lining to edge of kimono opening. Outside ties in contrasting fabrics are hand-stitched in a frog-type knot. The outer fabric and facings are a heavy weave in what feels like silk. The black and white grid pattern is an op-art eye-catcher with receding effect. The red fabric facings are heavy textured in a black/red cross-weave. Since a lot of older Japanese kimono fabric has some wool content this might have also. Especially since throughout the garment is marked by very tiny holes that hardly show even on the scanner as well as a few “nicks” or scrapes on red-fabric edges that might have been abraded. By contrast, the lining is a satin-y plum with some sheen and in pristine conditition. Size: OSFM Bust underarm to underarm across backj under sleeve opening: 25 Shoulder [slopes to form part of sleeve]: 27 Sleeve: 14 Waist: 25 Hip: 25 Length back of neckline to hem: 31 I hesitate to cut this up because it still looks super good with skinny pants. And it is just begging for someone clever to add appliqued patches and other bling. Watch for Fabric Museum to step in if you do not!
