Made of silk and other woven fabric, the backside is white with a floral pattern while the main part is black with embroidered gold chrysanthemum flowers (kiku). It is a very classic Buddhist color combination. Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year's Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.
