Description: Description: This is a Shigaraki-ware(*) incense container (a.k.a. Kogo in Japanese), which was originally made to be used at tea ceremony. Of course, you can use it in any ways with your creative idea. * Shigaraki-ware is a stoneware, which is made of a special clay (available only in Shigaraki) and fired at very high temperature (1,250~1,300 degrees Celsius). It does not use or apply any glaze before firing. The glaze naturally developed in the kiln when certain conditions met from ash of red pine tree and feldspar contained in the clay. Thus, it looks very natural and primitive. And not sure how it looks until it comes out from the kiln. Stoneware is still produced in Japan, because it is loved by the people who practice tea ceremony. The design or shape of this incense container is "Racoon" (タヌキ or 狸 in Japanese), which was drawn by the artist Rakusai on the original wooden box (photo #1). Quite funny and lovely. Artist: This was made by TAKAHASHI Rakusai the 4th. (1925 ~ / 4代 高橋楽斉 in Japanese). He has been known as a topnotch pottery artist in Shigaraki and mainly produced tea utensils. He engraved his initial (Ra or ら in Japanese) at the outside bottom (the last photo #14). And signed (Rakusai or 楽斉 in Japanese cursive script) with his seal on the box (photo #1). Condition:Both the incense container and the original wooden box signed by the artist are in excellent condition.
