Description: Japanese Shinto Deity. Carved from a single block of wood. Depicting Sugawara No Michazane of the Heian Period. One of the few humans to be deified after death into a Shinto deity, or, Tenjin, with a plum blossom carved in the chest, similar to the Maeda Clan from 1467 to 1868. Statue stands 3 feet (91.44CM) tall by 3 feet wide ( 91.44 CM) by 1 and 1/2 feet (45.72 CM) deep and weighs 56.2 pounds (123.90 kilograms). This is a life sized wood carving sculpture. This piece was purchased at an estate sale a few years ago. I have contacted many experts to get information on the sculpture and have reached very little in conclusions. Some think it had to of been acquired from a shrine in Japan. The only similar item that can be found online is a sculpture of Minamoto No Yoritomo on display at the Tokyo National Museum, you can see it through a google search. There is a muted tan pigment in every crevice of the entire sculpture, around the eyes and lips and beard has a close up picture to show the pigment
