Description: This rare, monumental tea caddy was created by the famous Japanese company, Asahi Shoten. The company was founded in Yokohama the the early 1900's, the late Meiji period. The caddy is quite large, 5 3/8" tall, 4 5/8" wide and weighs a hefty 31 oz of 998 pure silver. The surface is beautifully finished with thousands of hand applied soft hammer marks. The bottom bears the signature of Asahi Shoten with the 'rising sun in splendor'. The caddy retains both the outer and interior covers. Some tarnish remains although it has been polished. There is a dent in the inner cover on the edge as well as on the top of the outer lid, see pictures. Both could be easily hammed out by an accomplished silversmith (especially since the silver is soft due to its purity). There is scratching commensurate with age and use. This exquisite tea caddy is incredibly rare and possibly unique, as I have not yet found another like it in either size, weight or design. It is for the discerning collector of fine Japanese sterling!
