JBL Paragon SN 848 Vintage Speaker - Displayed like on other

Description: JBL Paragon - D44000Matt Garrett - Dallas Texas Paragon #848Available to the worldwide audio community is Paragon 848. JBL Paragon. D44000 (Light Walnut). This unit is a little lighter than the more common "walnut" finish but its not light oak. This Paragon is from the 70s, looks to be 1974 based on family memory and records and SN correlation... 075/375/LE-15 original driver complement with only LE-15 Lansalloy surrounds being replaced. See Video on that necessity as general knowledge for all old JBL Lansalloy; https://youtu.be/o1B96wf_BPgThis particular Paragon is one owner from Houston TX, River Oaks Mid Century Significant Home, owner was Engineering Professor at Rice until passing. I bought from his home 2017. This speaker is a "user" in terms of collection, I would rate it a 10++++/10 sonic and 8.5/10 cosmetic with only a few very coverable issues on the top as its weak point. Yea I can take to guy who can doctor where you cant see some item marks, but I don't.. Just leave original as items can simply go back and hide those marks with other complementary items to accent your room. I am not looking to "get rid of this" but am loosely offering it against my others that are in the 40K+ price range. This one is less..... and it is nice.... and it is proven. If you buy it, I have another as mentioned I will put in its place and a I'm also working on a restoration Paragon that wont be anything original that I may put there one day to just personally push the envelope of this design and see if I can add my own 2 cents of improvement to its uniqueness. This one here, 848, is original, not a restoration or a doctored cosmetic unit. Very collectable. Use as is or make it a little better if you need to in your ownership. Now for some silly audiophile stuff;I have just kept this unit for play, and to date is been an experiment to test what would be the most sonically pleasing Paragon setup I have ever had out of some 40 units over my many years of these. It may be the one of the most seen Paragons on Youtube as I have it in a 10000 SQ ft building and am using professional Crown and other gear to run it as more of a real sound reinforcement unit style vs a cooped up living room unit running MC or Marantz, or guru audiophile gear. It is dialed in, and it really is impressive, kind of showing what one of these was designed for as more of a center main speaker for a large venue, and my setup proves what one is REALLY capable of vs just conservative lollygag listening where the wife may say "turn it down" in a residential living room. As comparison, I also have the dream collector system too with my longest owned Paragon I bought in 80s, all tube triode mode run audiophile purism with Marantz 7C worked by top gurus and model 9s and even an 8 for bi amp playing comparisons. That system is great but a far cry from sonic venue desirability but displays well. This Crown Macrotec ran tri amp 220V supplied on 2 circut system smokes in on every test and impresses all who hear it. I do back it up with Pro JBL Differential Subs, but the vids below are not using them. I do all sorts of playing with it from toning it to near but compressed clipping from 18Hz up to immeasurable Khz measuring the room acoustics just for my own education in this hobby that is always ongoing. I have learned that I cannot hear above 12Khz myself... try that test yourself too... Your in for a shock I promise if you are above 50. But on the Paragon, the SPL this creates in freq ranges you dont expect in the venue is amazing, the low end you lose in a house or small room is there in full X10 in this venue. In fact I was in shock at the level of low end of the Paragon reproduces when you give it breathing/projection room. I have always told people, if you like bass, dont get a paragon, or at least complement it if you must. I'm at a 180deg opinion now. If you like bass, the paragon is impressive... but as long as its in a large area. I am also in "shock" that the LE-15 pair will run great at 600W 8 ohm RMS per channel on good A/B high quality amp if you know what your doing . They come alive and all the "mud" you get on some audiophile tube is gone for crisp and tight transitions I did not think possible. It really seems to peak SPL at 50 ft but then again the room it is in is 100'x100' so we are in the center focus. Once you get into some harmonics zones, you really get some interesting results too. Something I have been educating myself on but am still ignorant. Tuning a room is truly an impossible task for every sq ft, but you get the sweet spots and the Paragon will impress in 80% of the room. The elevation of the unit was huge along with the space from wall.. In a house you have no way "not" to place it at least close against a wall unless your whole house is the listening room like this building is, but in a real listening room or place like this you can move it out and tune the room somewhat. I mean, life changing factor with this thing elevated too. Its up high with a slight tilt focus on the center point of building at 50 ft. It actually projects 100HZ and below better than the dual 18, Crown MA-5202 powered JBL differential subs I have in and out of the complement as tests. The paragon will go sub 20hz too where you can feel it on tone tests and still produce a modest SPL at 50 ft comparable to pro subs at 5X the power. The clarity and depth is even better with its reflectivity mixed in with what more of a large venue like an old theater would have. Now this is all ramble but its kind of my report on what I have learned playing with one of these for the better part of a year in my spare time. Any Paragon can do this, mine is nothing special, just a plane o paragon... I have NO MODS in this Paragon. Its the room thats 90%, and 10% the fact I am using gear that audiophiles usually shy away from, very high power A/B amps and what is touted by many engineers as the best drive/electronic x-over, Ashley Protea. Tuning with this makes it something sonic to behold mixing modern with vintage. Anyway, the Paragon with a 20 watt 50 buck reciever would still sound pretty good in this venue. Its something to behold and I have had the privilege of playing with it all sorts of different ways. I did this years ago with custom A7s and a few other things, but the Paragon as stand alone in a large venue property placed and tuned is the single most amazing non professional array, non complemented unit by itself ever. I may try 2 at some point but not sure quite how to do that yet in my place. Now proof is in the sound.... if you got a good system to play these on.... They are not bad considering this is Iphone vid.
