Description: Victor-Jean Desmeures (1895-1978), Vintage French Gouache Painting, Penerf, Village in Brittany, Figures, Signed This charming vintage French gouache painting on paper depicts morning in the village of Penerf, Brittany, as marked on the back, “Matin à Pénerf, Morbihan”. The scene shows the street known today as “Benoni Thébaut”, as viewed from the seaside. In the foreground a woman in a traditional Brittany costume walks with a child, a man in a swimsuit can be seen behind them and farther in the distance, a woman is seen from the back. It is signed “Desmeures” and came from the sale at Drouot auction house in Paris of the contents of the studio of artist Victor-Jean Desmeures (1895-1978), French painter from Lyon. Desmeures studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and then at the Académie Ranson in Paris. Starting in 1924 he exhibited regularly in Paris at the Salon d’Automne, of which he was a member, and at the Salon des Tuileries. He also showed at and was a founding member of the Salon du Sud-Est, created in 1925 to promote artists in the Lyon region. He exhibited also at the Exposition Coloniale Internationale in Paris in 1931 and designed a famous poster for it, “Le Tour du Monde en un jour”. He showed at the Exposition Universelle of 1937 and received a gold medal. In addition to being a painter, Desmeures also designed fabric as well as theater sets, especially for events at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. Desmeures is known for his paintings of views of Paris and its surrounding region, especially the valleys of the Seine and the Marne rivers, as well as scenes of Brittany and Normandy. In additionhe painted portraits and also frescoes. Fifteen of his works were acquired by the French state and by the city of Paris. His work can be found in the collection of several museums. Today Victor-Jean Desmeures is listed in numerous art databases and in the sold listings of various French auction houses. He is listed in the Bénézit Dictionary of Artists, the renowned and very extensive publication of biographical information on visual artists in all fields.This piece is in very good condition with the exception of signs of normal age and use and marks of scotch tape on the corners where the artist mounted the piece on a paper backing and which would be covered by a frame.
