JEAN GENET—Thief's Journal—1st Edition 1st Printing HARDCOVER—Grove Press—VG/VG+

Description: • For Your Consideration: • A First-Edition Hardcover from 1964 in VERY GOOD / VERY GOOD PLUS Condition: • “THE THIEF’S JOURNAL” (Grove Press, 1964) (Hardcover, First US Edition, First US Printing) • BY JEAN GENET • FOREWORD: JEAN-PAUL SARTRE • TRANSLATION: BERNARD FRECHTMAN • ABOUT THIS TITLE: • “I do not fear to call this book, the most beautiful GENET has written.” —JEAN-PAUL SARTRE, FROM HIS FOREWORD • “Only a handful of twentieth-century writers, such as KAFKA and PROUST, have as important, as authoritative, as irrevocable a voice and style.” —SUSAN SONTAG• “GENET consistently broke lyrical conventions, creating a narrative approach as a stream of his unique consciousness, unexpectedly poetic.” —MARK WILLIAM NORBY, BAY AREA REPORTER • “One of the strongest and most vital accounts of a life ever set down on paper…. GENET has dramatized the story of his own life with a power and vision which take the breath away. THE THIEF’S JOURNAL will undoubtedly establish GENET as one of the most daring literary figures of all time.” —NEW YORK POST • “Delicious and dissident.” —HOLLY PESTER, GRANTA • “GENET is one of those creatures who sum up or express the potentialities of an entire species or form even as its life is passing from it…one of the most striking things about GENET’s work, and especially THE THIEF'S JOURNAL, is the consciousness with which it is suffused.”—STEVEN MARCUS, NEW YORK REVIEW OF BOOKS • “A literary creation of great importance and midnight beauty.” —LIBRARY JOURNAL • “Beside [GENET], HENRY MILLER is but a cheerfully smutty college sophomore, SADE a dilettante aristocrat of eccentric habits, GIDE a genteel old lady sedately cultivating nightshade in her little kitchen garden.” —TIME MAGAZINE • “To read GENET is in the end to accept the utterly undomesticated peculiarity of his sensibility, which returns constantly to an area where revolt, passion, death, and regeneration are linked.”—EDWARD SAID, LONDON OBSERVER • “His most exquisite piece of autobiographical fiction. He is the transparent observer reclaiming the suffering and exhilaration of his own follies, trials, and evolution. There are no masks; there are veils. He does not retreat; he extracts the noble of the ignoble…. GENET’s sense of language [moved] seamlessly from street argot to the sublime…. Every word written in THE THIEF’S JOURNAL is conscious, as stone by stone, GENET draws us into his triad of transgression, criminality, and betrayal, transfigured as love through his pen…. For myself, every page was a miracle, and for ROBERT [MAPPLETHORPE], a portal into a world he was clandestinely drawn and would eventually immortalize through the image…. GENET’s poetry drew me to write; his imagery drew ROBERT [MAPPLETHORPE] to the camera.” —PATTI SMITH, THE PARIS REVIEW • • For other details about this book, please see below. • TITLE: “THE THIEF’S JOURNAL” AUTHOR: JEAN GENET FOREWORD: JEAN-PAUL SARTRE TRANSLATION: BERNARD FRECHTMAN TYPE: HARDCOVER PUBLISHER, LOCALE, & YEAR: Grove Press (New York), 1964 EDITION: FIRST US EDITION, FIRST US PRINTING *RE: On the Copyright Page, the statement “First Edition” appears—with no later printings listed.
