This is the first time all of Joan Sutherland's studio recitals have been made available in a single collection and the set is released in time for what would have been the diva's 85th birthday on 7 November 2011; October 10 marks the first anniversary of her death. The career of Dame Sutherland is widely recognized as one of the most important of any twentieth-century vocal artist; in terms of its length, consistency, and impact on the wider international operatic scene it can certainly be positioned, along with just a handful of others, as genuinely historic.These discs come from the latter years of Sutherland's career. Much of the set, however, is taken up with early recordings, which capture her voice at its freshest and most responsive. The 23 CDs are presented in cardboard sleeves with original cover art; a 48-page booklet contains an appreciation of Joan Sutherland by opera writer and critic George Hall in English, French, and German.
