The artwork is signed by John B. Mainga (1954-2000). John B. Mainga was born in 1954 in the district of Machakos in Kenya. He began his art education in Shauri Moyo YMCA in Nairobi. Financial hardship forced him to abandon his art studies before their conclusion, but he familiarised himself with techniques that he was to be well known for; "leather batik". With his technique of leather batiks Mainga has achieved a unique effect, his compositions glow full of colour.Since his student days in 1976 John Mainga exhibited in most galleries in Nairobi. In 1985 he had his first exhibition at the French Cultural Centre. In 1990 the first solo exhibition at the Gallery of Contemporary East African Art at the National Museum in Nairobi, where he later regularly exhibited. The first international exhibition took place in New York in the Lamu Gallery. In 1994 and 1995 he came to Wiesbaden and after these successes he then went on to exhibition in 1995 and 1996 in Gallery Wis in Amsterdam .John Mainga died in a car accident in Nairobi in 2000.
