Description: Born and reared in New Orleans, John Churchill Chase was a life long promoter of the city of his birth. After studying at the Chicago Academy of fine arts he returned home where he spent the rest of his life as a cartoonist and writer on the history of his native city and state. He is perhaps best remembered as the cartoonist for the Times-Picayune newspaper and editorial cartoonist for WDSU TV. Offered for sale is his widely read Frenchmen Desire Good Children (New Orleans: Robert L. Crager, 1949). The book, a condensed but comprehensive history of New Orleans, is a great introduction to the "Big Easy." Chase uses street names and and their origins to illustrate New Orleans history. The book is heavy on interesting trivia. It is enhanced by Chase's cartoons. It should be noted that the book was written before the modern civil rights movement and the language may offend some. Hardcover with mylar protected dust jacket; 1st ed.; 246 pp.; pictorial end papers. Signed by Chase on half-title page with caricature of his likeness. Dedicated by Chase and Henry B. Curtis (New Orleans city councilman, District A, 1958-70?) to Charles E. Beard (President. Braniff Airlines, 1954-65?). Edges of dust jacket worn; otherwise, a nice copy of the true first edition. Online median price for signed copies, $75. Don’t be shy; give it a try. Doc deals!
