Description: British Parliament 1925 Vintage LithograpJohn Smith Attacks Pamunkey Indian Chief Opechancanough - 1906 Half-Tone Print A dramatization of a person or event in American History. Opechancanough was paramount chief of the Powhatan Confederacy in present-day Virginia from 1618 until his death. He had been a leader in the confederacy formed by his older brother Powhatan, from whom he inherited the paramountcy. Opechancanough quickly becomes a part of the English's Jamestown story after encountering Captain John Smith shortly after the arrival of the English in 1607. Smith was captured by a winter hunting party led by Opechancanough near the mouth of the Chickahominy River in December of that year. The print depicts English captain John Smith grabbing Pamunkey Indian chief Opechancanough by the hair and threatening him with a pistol, depicting an incident that took place in late January 1609. When Captain Smith and his men arrived in Pamunkey territory to trade for food, the Pamunkey plotted an ambush. According to Smith's later account, the Englishman turned the tables on Opechancanough, when he abruptly seized the Indigenous chief and "led the trembling king, near dead with fear amongst all his people." This incident was probably embellished in Smith's version, according to the anthropologist Helen Rountree; nonetheless, it likely had a substantial impact: "This humiliation would have been … excruciating for a man who was also a weroance [or chief]. The onlookers would have been appalled: the unthinkable had happened. And it is very likely that Opechancanough never forgave [Smith] … " Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Size: Approximately 8" X 5" Blank on Reverse Condition: Excellent - Very Good - Good - Fair - Poor (but of historical interest) << Click Here to See Other Prints >> This is an Original Item(s) - Not a Reproduction Important: P/H is combined on multiple items that can be mailed together. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
