About This Print: Having unusually attractive features and a sheltered anchorage on its west side, Monhegan Island, ten miles off the coast of Maine, began to arouse the attention of explorers and seafarers from Europe around the outset of the 16th century. We are told that mainland Indians had been visiting the island for fishing since the year 1000. It is due to the absence of change and the preservation of the island’s pristine habitat that those who visit gain serenity and inspiration from its captivating ambiance. It has long been a favored retreat for nature lovers and artists alike. The scene shows groups of hikers disembarking to enjoy the island’s trails, many of which lead to the east. This composition reveals the characteristics of the rocky island, the wharf side buildings and the far distant mainland hills.
