Description: Up for sale is a 1946 Rare Demonstration Etching by John Taylor Arms (American, 1887-1953) The pictured etching is of the Greenfield Hill Congregational Church. After the Steeple toppled over in the Hurricane of 1944. John Taylor Arms, a Fairfield CT Resident, donated his time to contribute his talent. Below the plate in pencil and signed reads ” Demonstration plate drawn and printed in 2 1/2 hours at Fairfield High School, Fairfield, Conn. March 29, 1946 for benefit of Greenfield Hill Congregational Church” and signed John Taylor Arms. The etching is 7” by 4.5” shown inside the matte in original 10" x 14" frame of the times. The etching is in Excellent shape, but the front mat has some light foxing. John Tayler Arms is considered one of the most famous printmaker of the early 20th century. I removed it from the frame to clean the glass and inspect the etching. It looks very clean. I taped the back paper back on temporarily He was known for his medieval architectural etchings that combined precise realism with a sense of soaring spirituality. He has works in number of museums across the country including; The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Chrysler Museum of Art and The National Gallery. He served as president of the American Society of Graphic Artists and was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member in 1930, and became a full member in 1933. An educator as well as printmaker, Arms wrote the Handbook of Print Making and Print Makers (1934) and did numerous demonstrations and lectures.
