Description: VERY GOOD CONDITION This sale is for a vintage 6-Volume Boxed set The World of John Wyndham containing his six major science fiction/dystopian novels entitled: The Day of the TriffidsThe Kraken WakesThe ChrysalidsThe Midwich CuckoosTrouble with LichenChocky The books were published by Penguin Books Ltd., of Harmondsworth, Middlesex, in association with Michael Joseph, of London, in 1976 (Triffids/Chrysalids were late 1975 second printings) and each book is a complete and unabridged edition. These volumes all feature cover art illustrated and designed by Harry Willock. The Day of the Triffids A post-apocalyptic classic in which the world is infested by triffids, grotesque and dangerous plants, over seven feet tall, originally cultivated for their yield of high-grade oil. So long as conditions give the mastery to their human directors, they are a valuable asset to mankind. But when a sudden universal disaster turns those conditions upside down, then the triffids, seizing their opportunity, become an active and dreadful menace. The Kraken Wakes The title of the book is taken from a poem by Tennyson, and it tells of the awakening and rise to power of forces from beneath the surface of the sea. The almost imperceptible beginnings and the cruelly terrifying consequences of this threat to the world are seen through the eyes of a radio script-writer and his wife in this apocalyptic science fiction classic in which the author demonstrates that an alien invasion of Earth could take a very different form from that in "The War of The Worlds." The Chrysalids In my view his best work. This is a thrilling and realistic account of the future, post-apocalypse world beset by genetic mutations. In this story we are taken into the anguished heart of a community where the chances of breeding true are less than fifty per cent and where deviations are rooted out and destroyed as offences and abominations, "Blasphemies" and the handiwork of the Devil. The story is told by one of a small group of youngsters who can communicate with each other via telepathy. This unusual mutation would be considered a "blasphemy" they carefully conceal their abilities as all who are different must be banished to the dangerous ‘Fringes’ or killed. The Midwich Cuckoos The story is set largely within Midwich, Winshire, a typical small English village. A series of incidents near the village causes anybody who passes a certain boundary line instantly to fall unconscious. Investigations rules out any chemical or biological cause, while aerial photography reveals a peculiar silver object on the ground in the village itself. After a period of one day the effect vanishes, along with the object. The villagers wake, apparently with no ill-effects. However, some months later a follow-up study reveals that every woman of child-bearing age is pregnant, with all indications that the pregnancies were initiated on the “Dayout.” Later, when the children are born they appear normal, except that they all have blonde hair and unusual golden eyes. These children have none of the genetic characteristics of their parents. As they grow up, it becomes increasingly apparent that they are, at least in some respects, not human. They possess telepathic abilities, including the ability to psychically force their will on others and control their actions and organs and other parts of the body. Trouble with Lichen A young female biochemist who discovers that a chemical extracted from an unusual, very rare and difficult to cultivate strain of lichen can be used to slow down the ageing process, enabling people to live to around 200–300 years. Chocky David Gore becomes concerned that his twelve-year-old son, Matthew, is too old to have an imaginary friend. His concerns deepen as Matthew becomes increasingly distressed and blames it on arguments with this unseen companion, whom he calls "Chocky". Then Matthew started doing things he couldn’t do before. Like counting in binary-code mathematics. As the story unfolds it becomes clear that the friend is too intelligent and frightening to be imaginary but is an alien consciousness communicating with Matthew's mind. The situation attracts the interest of shadowy government forces… John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris (1903–1969) was an English science fiction writer who is best known under the pen name John Wyndham (although he also used other combinations of his names, e.g., John Beynon and Lucas Parkes). Many of his works were set in post-apocalyptic landscapes. The book measures 7.1 inches x 4.3 inches (a little bigger in the slipcase) and has 272 + 240 + 200 + 220 + 204 + 153 pages. The books are in good, clean and neat condition for softbacks of its age, having been very-well protected by the original slipcase. Apart from a previous owner’s gift inscription for a speedy from the President of a cricket/sports club there are no other ink or pencil markings in any of the books. The bindings are very good with no loose or missing pages. The slipcase is very good for its age, with minor wear/scuffs. A wonderful complete vintage boxed set.
