Description: This rare 1981 silkscreen, 8vo Festival de Bomba y Plena, Dedicado a Ismael Rivera, is in very good condition. The colors are vibrant and the paper, which has extra wide borders, is sturdy. There are a few age spots primarily on the white left and top borders, none on art (See photos). Lower right side white border is slightly frayed (See photo). None of this is visible when framed. Artist Jose R. Alicea's signature is on the plate. Jose Alicea was born in 1928 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He began taking art classes with acclaimed artist Miguel Pou when he was barely 16 years old. He worked as a sign maker and window decorator at New York Department store in San Juan, as well as an illustrator for the Department of Labor. He became an assistant to famed artist and printmaker Lorenzo Homar at the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture. In 1960, he began winning awards in woodcuts, linocuts, silkscreens and etchings and he hasn't stopped. He's been a professor and has been awarded honorary doctoral degrees from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus and the Art School in San Juan. He has participated in art exhibits in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Spain, Chile, Russia and Brazil. His works are in collections in the Art Museum of Puerto Rico, the Library of Congress in Washington, the Boston Public Library, Casa las Americas in Havana, New York's Museum of Modern Art and the Museo del Barrio, Philadelphia's Art Museum, Museum of Modern Art of Latin America in Washington D.C. and the State Museum of Majdanek in Lublin, Poland, among others.
