The statue is part of the sprawling Jose Marti Memorial complex that was completed in 1958, a year before the Cuban revolution triumphed. The memorial, which also contains gardens and a museum, is dominated by a star-shaped 358-foot marble tower. The statue of Jose Marti (beautifully illustrated on this poster) serves as a powerful symbol of national identity to Cubans on and off the island. The photo on this poster was taken in 1997 by JOSE A. FIGUEROA (born 1946), a prominent Cuban photographer whose work has been displayed in exhibitions around the world. This glossy poster, which measures approximately 20 by 13.5 inches (51 by 34 cm), was released by Cuba's cultural ministry as part of a portfolio that reproduced some of the most famous photos of the Cuban revolution.
