Description: Joseph E. Brown Autographed Check - Civil War Governor, Georgia Offered for your consideration is a check written and signed by Joseph E. Brown, the Civil war governor of the state of Georgia and a strong proponent of state’s rights. The check is written on “LOWRY’S BANK, 69 EAST ALABAMA STREET, COR LOYD ST, ATLANTA, GA.”, with “W.M. & R.J. LOWRY, BANKERS” noted as the principals. The check is accomplished in purple ink and issued to “J A Corbally” in the amount of “One hundred & twenty five 20” (“125.20”). It is boldly signed at the conclusion by “Joseph E Brown” with his distinctive signature. The recipient has endorsed the back in period ink. The check has been punch, “X”, and stamp cancelled, with the latter just touching two letters in Brown’s signature. Seven vertical folds are present, three of which affect the signature. The check, which measures approximately 3 1/16 x 8 3/8 inches, was hand cut from the sheet, with the result that the bottom of the “J” in the signature has been cut. Overall, a bold and easily displayed example of this important Civil War governor. Joseph Emerson Brown was born in the Pickens District of South Carolina on April 15, 1821. He moved with his family to Union County, Georgia, but returned to South Carolina to attend Calhoun Academy. He graduated from Yale Law School, returned to Georgia and commenced the practice of law. He was elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1849 and a state circuit court judge in 1855. He was elected governor of Georgia in 1857, serving in that capacity until the close of the Civil War in 1865. He was briefly imprisoned after the war. From 1865 through 1870 he served as chief justice of the Georgia supreme court, resigning in the latter year to accept the presidency of the Western and Atlantic Railroad Company. He served in the United States Senate from May 26, 1880 until March 3, 1891. Joseph E. Brown died in Atlanta, Georgia on November 30, 1894 and was buried in that city’s Oakland Cemetery.
