Harper, Richard Lyman Bushman, David F. Holland, Anthony Sweat, John Welch, and others. These essays are compiled from the "Joseph Smith's First Vision: 200 Years On" conference, held at the Huntington Library on January 24-25, 2020. Joseph Smith's First Vision is a foundational event in the history and development of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Occurring in 1820, when Joseph was just 14 years old, this vision marked the beginning of the Restoration of the Gospel. According to Smith's account, he went into a grove of trees to pray, asking God which church he should join. In response, he experienced a divine manifestation in which God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him. He was told not to join any of the existing denominations, as they had strayed from the true gospel. This event is significant for several reasons. First, it established Joseph Smith as a prophet chosen by God to restore the true Church, which had been lost after the original apostles' deaths. Second, it introduced the LDS doctrine that God and Jesus Christ are two distinct personages, countering the traditional Christian concept of the Trinity. The First Vision set in motion the events that would lead to the translation of the Book of Mormon, the establishment of the LDS Church in 1830, and the subsequent growth of the movement. For Latter-day Saints, this vision represents the beginning of God's direct guidance in restoring the gospel in modern times. Copyright © 2018-2025 TDM Inc.
