Description: JOURNEY TO IXTLAN: THE LESSONS OF DON JUAN, by Carlos Castaneda, 1972 1st edition 5th printing, Simon And Schuster (New York), 8.55 x 5.612-inch linen-clad HB, missing DJ, 315 pp. printed on matte-finished stock; very good condition at age 52 (clean and tightly bound, bright covers, 3 straight corners with bump at tip of lower front one; original owner's interesting book stamp near top of upper inside front cover; pages are unmarked but moderately toned over text and darker at the edges; all interior pages other than the semi-thick gold end papers have a few soft dips left to right in the middle; it's clearly a strange manufacturing defect, but the book still has great structural integrity and is easily readable, also rare). Carlos Castaneda was born in Peru in 1925 and migrated to America in 1951. He applied himself and became a naturalized citizen, a source of great pride for him. While earning a B.A. and Ph.D. in Anthropology at UCLA, he wrote 3 bestselling books about his extensive training in Sonora, Mexico the 1960s with don Juan Matus, a Yaqui "Man Of Knowledge" widely respected by locals as both a shaman and sorcerer. Per the author in his 8-page Introduction, this apprenticeship had taken place over the course of a decade, and when he paid a visit to do Juan on May 22, 1971, he was told the sessions were over. Over the course of his lifetime (he died in 1998), Castaneda's 3 DON JUAN books sold more than 8 million copies and were published in 17 languages. He wrote a 4th book - 1974's TALES OF POWER, in which he revealed that a more recent visit to don Juan resulted in the old shaman recognizing him as a "nagual," or leader. The elevation to this high shaman rank prompted the author, who was a public figure not not widely available, to do a TIME Magazine interview. There are many different later editions of the title on eBay, only 2 other 1972 hardbacks without DJs which are both 5th printings like mine.. One is in acceptable condition for $24.99 + $6.23 shipping. The one is a good ex-library HB for The other is a good ex-library copy for $29.99 with free shipping. Even with the soft vertical ripples at the middle of every page, my book's the best copy by far. My Buy-It-Now price of $34.00 includes shipping with cardboard backing in a padded envelope via media mail, which takes around 7 days with tracking.
