Description: Julian Ritter Clown Oil on Board Painting - Signed I bought two Julian Ritter Clown paintings at a silent auction in Los Angeles. They are being sold separately. The appraised work is a 20th century oil on board painting executed by German artist Julian Ritter (1909-2000). The painting depicts a bust-length portrait of a clown smiling and gazing directly at the viewer. Images like this were common within Ritter’s oeuvre, and he became well known for depictions of circus clowns and studies of nude women. Originally born in Germany, the artist and his mother immigrated to the United States after WWI. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and also the Art Center School in Los Angeles. He then worked for various film studios painting portraits and backgrounds for movie sets. He did murals for the Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939 and painted portraits of prominent Californians. Following service in WWII, he returned to Los Angeles. From 1966 to 1985 he lived in Santa Barbara; his remaining years were spent in Hawaii. Frame measures roughly between 18" - 19" H and 16" -17" W The picture board itself measures roughly between 10" H and 8.25 W Email with any Questions or if you would like any additional Pictures.
