Description: KAISER WILHELM IILast Emperor of GermanyIN MILITARY UNIFORM CABINET CARD Dated1888 Last Emperor of Germany Photographed by Julius Cornelius Schaarwachter (July 14,1847 in Amsterdam - October 14, 1904 in Berlin) was a German photographer and publisher. Julius Cornelius Schaarwächter received his training in the photographic studio of his father Julius Schaarwächter. He then completed further training at the Berlin Trade Academy with Hermann Vogel. At the end of 1868 he went to Hamburg for two years, where he worked for the studio of August Mencke & Co. and as managing director for the H. Norden studio. On April 4, 1872, Schaarwächter's "Photographisch-artistisches Atelier und photographischer Kunstverlag" was opened in the house at Friedrichstraße 190 in Berlin. The Englishman J. R. Sawyer, who had visited Schaarwächter, wrote appreciatively about the photographer's meticulous care in an essay in the Photographische Mitteilungen (Photographic Communications). As early as 1882, his studio was covered in the English publication The Photographic Studios of Europe. In 1886 Schaarwächter moved into his own house at Leipziger Straße 130; although the studio was located in the rear building, the street front was entirely geared towards advertising for the photographer. In 1889, Schaarwächter opened a second studio in the building at Potsdamer Straße 7. In the same year, E. Kiewning wrote in detail in the journal Photographisches Archiv about the ambience and furnishings of the photographers' establishment, which was "one of the first in the residence".In May 1889 Schaarwächter was appointed "Court Photographer of His Majesty the Emperor and King and Her Royal Highness the Lady Hereditary Princess of Saxe-Meiningen, Princess of Prussia". His photographs, especially those of the imperial family, were distributed by the publishing house of the Neue Photographische Gesellschaft, among others. He also exhibited them in his shop windows and "accompanied the adolescent children" of Kaiser Wilhelm II with his photographs. The photographer Friedrich Goebel (1843–1934) and the later reportage photographer and filmmaker Louis Held (1851–1927) completed their training at Schaarwächter. According to the author Sybille Einholz, he was (in Berlin) "... the most successful photographer of the late 19th century, who was considered internationally important by his contemporaries". In the archive of the Association for the History of Berlin, there are portraits of 17 members from Schaarwächter's studio.Schaarwächter was buried in the family grave in the Old St. Matthew's Cemetery in Berlin, and the sculptor Wilhelm Wandschneider created a figure for the tomb. In 1938/1939, the family grave with a considerable part of the graves of this cemetery was reburied in the southwest cemetery of Stahnsdorf due to the urban planning of the National Socialists (old reburial in Dept. B) and is preserved there.
