From Northen Raftsundet, at Hanoy at the Northen Arctic Ocean) Outstanding painting with moonlit view from the Troll fjord located at Raftsundet strait in Lofoten Northen Norway. The scene features a rare Sámi river boat with Indigenous people. The small cottages seen to the right is the old Hanoy trading post, built in 1686. The lights from the trading post are beautifully reflected in the water and above in the sky one can see The North Star. The Raftsundet area is only accessible by boat and has been an attraction since the 1800s due to the beauty of its natural setting The Swedish painter and adventurer, Karl Tirén (1869-1955) painted this motif during his Sami expedition to northern Norway in 1908. He was working at a railway officer at the time which gave him the opportunity to visit and study culture of the indigenous Sami people in the most remote areas. His study of the Sami people was published in 1942 ( Die lappische Volksmusik Acta Lapponica) In 2019 a book that portrays Karl Tirén's journeys and his many meetings with the Sámi was published by Svenskt visarkiv. Born in Oviken, Jamtland, Sweden in 1869. Younger brother of the artist Johan Tirén . Karl took several trips in Europe and studied art and music in England, France and Germany.  He participated at the Paris exhibition in 1900, where he was represented with a painting of the Lapland mountains, which was awarded the grand prix. Karl Tirén took several expeditions to Northen Scandinavia where he studied the culture of the indigenous Sami people. He was hired as a railway officer which gave him the opportunity to visit and survey the most remote and rural areas in Northen Scandinavia. Karl Tirén is today a pioneering figure for his records of the Sami  people and their joik traditions. His artworks often bear a testimony to his deep connection with the majestic Nordic nature and its indigenous cultures. As a painter he was adventurous and sometime reckless. He was known for climbing mountains with his artist materials on his back and would jump off a train going full speed, if he saw a view he wanted to paint. His study of the Sami people was published in 1942 ( Die lappische Volksmusik Acta Lapponica) In 2019 a book that portrays Karl Tirén's  journeys and his many meetings with the Sámi was published by  Svenskt visarkiv.                                                       Shipping fees: United States/ Canada: 40 dollars.
