Description: KATHERINE HOOD MCCORMICK (American 1882-1960) "THE HEART OF PHILADELPHIA" Signed 'K H McCormick' bottom right, oil on canvas Dimensions: 33 x 25 in. Framed: In a period Newcomb-Macklin frame. The frame has a crack along the bottom lip. Provenance: The artist. Gift from the above to Ms. Maude Archer. Private Collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Freeman’s Auction The Freeman’s auction catalog references a partial Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art Exhibition label verso dated 1929. No such label is present. Just a few remnants. Under u.v. light there are a few tiny specks of restoration; canvas is not relined. Verso of canvas has some staining – the staining does not appear on the front of the canvas. The paint film has visible craquelure. It is stable. Note: The painting is softer and colors are more vivid, and pastelly in real life. The green colors are wonderful. The gold frame color throws off the camera and makes the painting look colder and harsher than it is. BIOGRAPHY A long-time resident of Germantown, Katherine Hood McCormick was born in Philadelphia in 1882 and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art from 1903 - 1911. She studied with, among others, Henry McCarter and Fred Wagner. McCormick is best known for her watercolors and woodprints, but she worked in pastels and oils as well. McCormick participated only in the inaugural exhibition of the Philadelphia Ten in 1917, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philadelphia_Ten and that year she displayed 25 land and seascape paintings. Later, she exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York, and annually until the 1950s at the Fellowship exhibitions at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
