Description: This weight is a red crimp rose with four green leaves arranged equally around the base of the rose. The crimp consists of fourteen petals arranged in rings of 4-4-3-3 from the outside. Kaziun used this same crimp multiple times. The rose is made of translucent burgundy glass over opaque white. The leaves are translucent green over opaque white. The weight is set atop a clear glass pedestal, with the rose tilted forward for viewing. There is a complex signature cane at the base of the rose, consisting of Kaziun's distinctive 'K' cane in black, surrounded by white. The 'K' cane is the surrounded by seven red heart canes surrounded by fluted yellow. Kaziun's weights are not dated, but this very distinctive cane can narrow the range. It was used by Kaziun in his earlier work, primarily in the 1950s and 1960s. It dates after the very early 'CK' cane, as well as earlier versions of the decorated 'K' cane used in the 1940s, but before he began using a gold foil 'K' and or a gold foil bee in the 1970s. The weight is a larger example of a Kaziun pedestal weight measuring just over 2" in diameter. With the pedestal it is 2.8" tall overall. The diameter of the pedestal base is 2.2". The weight is in perfect condition. Charles Kaziun Jr. (1919 - 1992) has been referred to as the father of the American paperweight renaissance. A self-taught glass worker, he produced some of the finest paperweights ever made over his six decade career. His work rivals the classic French glass houses that he was emulating, and his rediscovery of lost techniques of glass working paved the way for the modern artists of today. Item #N00095
