The author, Irving Bacheller was born on September 26, 1859 in Pierpont, New York. He spent his childhood working odd jobs to support his family while trying to attend school. Although he never received a high school diploma, Bacheller attended St. Lawrence University where he founded the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega. He received a B.S. and moved to New York to pursue a career in journalism. Bacheller became the editor of Daily Hotel Reporter and a year later joined the staff of the Brooklyn Daily Times as the Military and Naval Editor. In 1884 he received a promotion to Dramatic Editor for the Brooklyn Daily Times. The same year, he helped found the first newspaper syndicate in the United States. Born: September 26, 1859 in New York state and Died: February 24, 1950 (age 90 years). The illustrator, William Henry Dethlef Koerner is best known for his illustrations and his long and fruitful association with the Saturday Evening Post. His life spanned the great age of American illustration, also known as the Golden Age of Illustration. Along with the likes of Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell, Koerner became one of the master illustrators of the American West. He created over 2,000 beautiful works of art. Wilhelm Heinrich Detlev "Big Bill" Körner, also known as Wilhelm Heinrich Dethlef Koerner, William HD Koerner, WHDK, or W.H.D. was born in Germanty in 1878 and died in 1938 in New Jersey.
