Description: 'Kenning's Masonic Cyclopaedia and Handbook of Masonic Archaeology, History, and Biography' edited by Rev. A. F. A. Woodford, published by George Kenning, first UK edition 1878. Bound in blue cloth with bevelled edges, gilt and black designs across covers and spine, 8vo, pp.665 plus advertisements. An uncommon, alphabetically arranged reference work, of which a large part is said to have been written by its editor, Adolphus Frederick Alexander Woodford, a Freemason who rose to become 'Grand Chaplain' of United Grand Lodge of England in 1863. His editorship of the magazine Freemason led to the establishment of Quatuor Coronati Lodge, a body dedicated to masonic research. A curious record with advertisements and a list of subscribers in the rear. For more curiosities, visit our website or our Bedford shop!
