Description: This Japanese chisel was hand-forged by Nagaoke Kikuhiromaru, a famous blacksmith from the Nagayoshi family, using traditional techniques with laminated steel construction. The high carbon steel provides an extremely sharp edge while the soft backing steel provides toughness and durability. This is an uncommon chisel to find from Kikuhiromaru, as damekiri style chisels are typically made in Hokkaido (Northern Japan). The thick stamp makes me think it’s an older chisel or possibly a special edition. Condition: The chisel is in excellent used condition, showing few signs of use or wear. The back has been flattened and it has been sharpened to 8000 grit on Shapton Glass stones. The handle has been refinished and the hoop has been set. This was a new old stock item that has only been used to take a few test cuts. The style is Damekiri, popular in Hokkaido, typified by how the neck smoothly transitions into the blade, rather than the bulky shoulders that most Japanese chisels have. The smooth transition is more comfortable for paring work. The size is similar to a Chu-Tataki, inbetween Tataki Atsu and Oire. Thicker and more durable than smaller Oire Nomis, this is a good choice as a general purpose chisel that can easily handle heavy chopping work but also works well for detailed work and parinng. With a metal hoop to prevent splitting of the wood handle, it is meant to be hit with a genno or metal hammer.
